Egyptian Gold Slots
Egyptian Gold may not bring many surprises regarding its theme, but there are treasures to uncover here. Much like an actual archeological dig, you have to uncover the first few layers to get to the good stuff. That is not to say that the theme is irredeemable, but it could use a little more imagination. Don’t curse yourself by not opening this mummy’s tomb. Find out how you can end up with pockets of Egyptian Gold.
Where Are We?
It’s pretty clear that this game is supposed to have an Egyptian theme, but the game itself seems a little confused. The background shows a sand-covered temple like one may expect to see in Egypt, but if they were white pillars, it could easily be in Greece or Italy. It is a little strange that a game that leans into its theme in so many areas wouldn’t just put some pyramids or the Sphinx in the background. The background is dark and the three-row, five-reel slot takes up a significant portion of it, so the fact that the theme is a little off doesn’t really affect the game.
The interesting thematic choices carry over into the symbols. In one aspect, it’s great because it got away from the all-too-common playing card symbols, but it replaced them with playing card suit symbols, which isn’t much better. On top of that, they chose an interesting color scheme with the clover being a green gem, which speaks much more to an Irish theme than it does Egyptian. Players can also expect to see more theme-specific symbols like Ankhs, cobras, queens, pharaohs, scarabs, hieroglyphs, and the Eye of Horus as the scatter symbol.
The music is exactly what you would expect. It is a mixture of lyres, harps, and bongos that create a sound that is almost synonymous with ancient Egypt. The tone used for the spinning reels sounds like rolling dice, which is a nice departure from traditional sound effects. Ascending tones when you hit a win are also pretty standard, so the sound in this game isn’t a detriment, but it also won’t change much if you mute it.
Plenty of Gold in These Tombs
The wild symbol is a pyramid which is fitting, but it has a distinct rainbow look to it that doens’t fit with most depictions of the pyramids. The wild symbol brings a double whammy to the game as it fills its primary role as a replacement for any symbol in the game except the scatter symbol. It also has an expanding feature when it lands on the third reel which can expand to cover the entire third reel for more chances at winning lines.
The scarab bonus feature isn’t the most powerful, but it might be the most exciting. This feature can activate randomly after any spin; players will know because a scarab flies across the screen. When this feature is activated, you can choose one of five bonuses, including Random Wilds, Expanding Wilds, Magical Respins, Free Games, or the Jackpot Bonus.
The real heavy lifting is done by the free game picks bonus. When you land three scatter symbols anywhere on the board, it automatically gives you free spins and unlocks three bonuses. The first is the super-expanding wild, which has the potential to cover the board with wilds. Then there is the Wild Reel on every spin, which gets you eight more free spins with a guaranteed wild reel on each spin. Finally, there is the super expanding double wild that gives you ten free spins and doubles the pay of each winning line along with all the benefits of the super expanding wild.
There’s one more bonus, which is a fun game of luck. The jackpot pick bonus is another randomly triggered bonus that can happen after any spin. The scarab also initiates this bonus, and twelve random cards appear on the screen. If you can choose three like symbols, you win the progressive jackpot.
Stay for the Play
The theme isn’t as generic as it could be, but it's not exactly new or exciting either. The symbolism can be a bit confusing at times, and everything about it is pretty stereotypical. On the other hand, this game is packed with generous bonus features that may lead to big payouts but absolutely add excitement to the game. It doesn’t take a lot of imagination to guess what a game called Egyptian Gold is about, but you may still be surprised how little Egyptian and how much gold this game delivers.
